International long-distance camp in Potsdam

Berlin (pps) The swimmers will start into the new year with an international long-distance training camp (including Open water swimmers) to take place in Potsdam , Germany , on January 4-17, 2010. The training camp, an initiative of the German Swimming Federation, will unite athletes from Russia , Australia , South Africa , Italy as well as former European junior champion Pal Joensen (2008) of the Faroe Islands .

Sixth European record by Russia 's Lakhtyukhov

Berlin (pps) The internationally still unknown Russian swimmer Stanislav Lakhtyukhov (21) set the sixth European record at the Swimming World Cup in Berlin on Sunday morning. In the 100m breast-stroke event he improved the mark of Ukraine 's Igor Borysik (57,21) by five hundredths of a second to now 57,16 seconds.

Sergey Fesikov sets World record in Berlin

Berlin (pps) Russia 's Sergey Fesikov set the first World record at this year's Berlin World Cup. In the heats of the 100m individual medley he improved the record by Ryan Lochte (USA) on April 13 last year by two tenth of a second to now 50,59 seconds. “I had my sights set on this record” admitted the 20-year old Russian athlete, who set up two European records in the past meets of the World Cup series – 51,96 seconds in Durban and 51,45 seconds in Moscow . At the same time, the Berlin meet can celebrate its silver jubilee – Fesikov set the 25th World Cup World record in the history of the competition site at Europasportpark in 2000.

European record by Hungary 's Laszlo Cseh  

Berlin (pps) Records are not only set at the Berlin World Cup this weekend – at the short course Championships in Hungary's Szazhalombatta Laszlo Cseh improved his own European record in the 200m individual medley, set up on December 17, 2007, by 15 hundredths of a second to now 1:52,84 minutes. In the heats, however, his compatriot Daniel Gyurta (2:04,61 minutes) missed the European record of Melquiades Alvarez (Spain/2:03,46) by more than a second.


 World Cup meet completely sold-out on both competition days  

Berlin (pps) The Berlin Swimming and Diving Pool at Europasportpark on Landsberger Allee is completely sold-out on both competition days of the „FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup 2009“. The best field of entries, headed by US swimmer Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian of all times, has attracted innumerable fans. On both days the competition site had been sold out with approximately 2,000 visitors.


Hanna-Maria Seppala and Marleen Veldhuis will not compete

Berlin (pps) Hanna-Maria Seppala of Finland and Marleen Veldhuis of the Netherlands will not compete at the Berlin World Cup. At the meet in Stockholm on Wednesday, Finland 's Seppala had to cancel her two finals at short notice – she is now confined to bed, running a fever. On Tuesday Seppala had posted 1:54,71 minutes thus taking second place in the 200m freestyle. Dutch swimmer Veldhuis is currently concentrating on completing her degree and has reduced her training schedule. After a test at a meet in Bolzano last weekend the 30-year old European short course champion in the 50m and 100m freestyle decided not to start in Berlin .


World Cup for the first time on ten lanes
